Rockport Eye Associates is your go-to Coastal Bend optometrist for the treatment of astigmatism. The American Optometric Association (AOA) defines an astigmatism as a vision condition that causes blurred vision due either to the irregular shape of the cornea, the clear front cover of the eye, or sometimes the curvature of the lens inside the eye. This vision blurriness will seem as if you are looking at a picture that is out of focus. Astigmatism is a common condition that most people have to some degree or another. The more severe the astigmatism the more treatment is needed, treatment being a simple corrective eyeglass or contact lens. The cause of astigmatism is unclear, hereditary seems to play a factor and worsens with age.
As your go-to Coastal Bend optometrist, Rockport Eye Associates will test for astigmatism when you come in for a comprehensive eye exam. If Dr. Soto determines that you have an astigmatism and that treatment is required, she will go over possible treatment options with you. Depending on the severity of your astigmatism, one of the following treatments are available: corrective eyeglasses, corrective contact lenses, laser surgery, or a corneal modification procedure known as, orthokeratology (or Ortho-K).
Astigmatism is due to the irregular shape of the cornea or the lens inside the eye. The cornea is the part of the eye that is responsible for allowing us to see things clearly. This happens when the cornea properly focuses on light that enters the eye. With an astigmatism this process is disrupted by an abnormal curvature of the cornea. When the curve of the eye is off then the eye is unable to properly focus the light that is entering the eye, as a result, objects appear out of focus.
If you or someone you love are experiencing any of the blurred vision associated with astigmatism, you should make an appointment with your local Coastal Bend optometrist as soon as possible. We will give you a comprehensive eye exam and determine what is causing your blurred vision. After the eye exam a proper course of action can be taken to best treat your vision problem. At Rockport Eye Associates it is our mission to make sure that your vision is healthy and strong long into the future.
